Mechanical Engineer needed for REMOTE position! This is a contract position with contract to hire opportunity based on performance. Occasional travel to Texas would be needed, majority or work may be performed from a home office. Ideal candidates will have experience with mechanical equipment specifications including but not limited to pressure vessels, refrigeration and hazardous chemical containment. Building, refurbishing or retrofitting rail cars or similar would be a plus.

responsibilities:
- Develop detailed specifications for mechanical systems, including pressure vessels, refrigeration systems, and hazardous chemical containment systems.
- Design and build rail cars specifically tailored for the safe transportation of hazardous chemicals, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., DOT, AAR, and other safety guidelines).
- Ensure all designs meet safety, quality, and regulatory standards for hazardous material handling and transport.
- Perform structural and safety analysis on rail cars, pressure vessels, and other containment systems to ensure they are capable of withstanding the stresses and conditions associated with transporting hazardous chemicals.
- Conduct risk assessments and design reviews to identify potential failure points or weaknesses in the systems.
- Coordinate with internal teams, vendors, and external regulatory agencies to ensure the timely delivery of compliant systems.
- Review and approve production methods and ensure that all components meet required specifications for strength, durability, and safety.
- Oversee retrofitting and refurbishing of existing rail cars for enhanced safety in hazardous chemical transportation
- Ensure that all designs undergo rigorous testing to ensure they can safely transport hazardous materials under various conditions.
- Ensure all designs for rail cars and mechanical systems comply with industry regulations and safety standards, including DOT regulations for hazardous materials transportation, as well as ASME, API, and other relevant standards.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations related to hazardous chemical containment and transportation.
