Responsibilities
- Function:
The primary role of the MRB is to assess the severity of a defect, determine its root cause, and decide on the most appropriate course of action to minimize impact on production and quality while maintaining cost efficiency. - Team composition:
An MRB typically includes representatives from different departments like quality engineering, manufacturing engineering, purchasing, materials management, and sometimes design engineering. - Process:
- Identifying non-conforming material: When a quality issue is detected during manufacturing, the affected materials are flagged and sent to the MRB for evaluation.
- Review and analysis: The MRB team examines the defect details, including the cause, severity, and potential impact on the final product.
- Disposition decision: Based on the analysis, the MRB decides on the appropriate action, such as:
- Rework: Attempting to repair the defective component to bring it back to specification.
- Scrap: Discarding the material if the defect is irreparable.
- Use as-is: Utilizing the material in a specific application where the defect is not critical
- Return to supplier: Sending the non-conforming material back to the vendor for potential replacement
- Documentation:
The MRB process typically involves detailed documentation of the defect, the decision made, and any corrective actions taken to prevent future occurrences.
