Job Title: Payroll Specialist (Contract-to-Hire) Location: Norfolk, VA (Onsite) Job Type: Contract-to-Hire Schedule: Full-Time Compensation: Competitive, based on experience Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Payroll Specialist for a contract-to-hire opportunity in Norfolk, VA. This role is responsible for the preparation, processing, and auditing of bi-weekly payroll for the organization. The Payroll Specialist will collect, enter, and verify employee data—including wages, taxes, garnishments, benefits, and deductions—within our Payroll and Human Resources Information System (HRIS), ensuring accurate and timely compensation for all employees. Key Responsibilities: Prepare, process, and audit bi-weekly payroll for accuracy and compliance Collect and verify employee data including hours worked, leave, and benefit selections Maintain accurate records of payroll deductions such as taxes, garnishments, and benefits Ensure timely and accurate processing of employee compensation Enter and update employee data in HRIS, including new hires, terminations, and changes Assist with the reconciliation of payroll records with accounting systems Generate payroll-related reports and respond to audit inquiries Address payroll-related questions from employees and resolve discrepancies promptly Stay up to date on payroll regulations and recommend improvements to processes Qualifications: Prior experience in payroll processing is required strong understanding of payroll regulations, taxes, and deductions Familiarity with HRIS and payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Paycom, etc.) Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with discretion salary: $25 - $28 per hourshift: Firstwork hours: 8 AM - 5 PMeducation: BachelorsResponsibilities1. Coordinates with managers and assistant managers on the preparation and approval of employee timecards leave requests and other payroll operations. 2. Processes and audits payroll. Reviewing computed wages to ensure accuracy. 3. Ensures timely and accurate processing of pay deductions to include benefits, garnishment and applicable taxes. 4. Reconciles payroll data with accounting records to ensure accuracy. 5. Enters and updates personnel information to include compensation and benefits information for new hires, transfers, promotions and terminations in HRIS and VRS Navigator. 6. Responsible for the submission of retirement contributions such as VRS snapshots, Mission Square files and VOYA files.. 7. Answers questions and resolves issues regarding payroll and time keeping including time clocks. 8. Updates, verifies and maintains compensation schedules and Payroll Change Forms; ensures documents are prepared timely and accurately. 9. Prepares/processes special projects as needed as it relates to compensation for Authority personnel members to include cost of living adjustments, special bonuses and payouts per policy, if applicable 10. Generates, prepares and disseminates reports and other documents for management and auditors. 11.
